Ruby watches Weiss and thinks it odd how they’d never spoken to each other before—the girl in front of her, running long fingers through hair like powdered snow, chewing on the inside of her cheek as her eyes stayed fixed on the front of the class.
(Weiss probably knew all about how Ruby had stopped attending high school, desperately transferring to self-study after the god awful experience that was her freshman year—just like how Ruby knows how Weiss got that scar on her face.)
It was a special type of intimacy, Ruby thinks, to know someone's deepest secrets but not their favorite color.
It was also, she thinks again, a special kind of injustice.

Summary
She tried forcing herself to remember sometimes.
It never went very well, her head always reduced to a series of harsh aches, making Ruby feel like someone had taken a hammer to the inside of her brain—mashing and mashing until all that was left was a weird runny stew. It never failed to leave her exhausted, and even though every time she tried she made sure she was alone Snow always seemed to stumble upon her with an unreadable expression on her face.
(Though maybe that was just because Ruby couldn’t remember the expression on her face. Semantics)
Or;
“I’m fine.” She said finally. “Don’t... Don’t worry.”
It almost felt like the wrong thing to say, like it was too comfortable and too familiar for where she was—who she was with. It almost felt like Ruby was toeing the line of a boundary she couldn’t see, and she was afraid that when she could finally know what it was it would be because she’d crashed into it so violently that she’d been sent sprawling to the ground.

As with all poorly thought out plans though, it's only a matter of time before they're in over their head.
A black comedy focusing on the intricacies of insurance fraud, and killing your friends.

Fire.
Blazing heat rains down from above.
She’s surrounded by flames.
She falls.
A star streaking down from the heavens.
Burned up by the atmosphere, nothing but a certain and inevitable end. Like a shooting star, there is a wish hung on her demise.
Live.
A wish for life.
One that begins with death.
The same dream haunts her in the dark. Visions of her descent, her final moments, of another life perhaps. Her own death.
"Nightmare, darling?" A leather gloved hand carefully brushes a few strands of hair out of her face, pulling her from the throes of darkness, from the inferno that engulfs her.
Kafka.
Why is she here? Himeko pushes her away. This is not how she wants Kafka to see her. Whenever Kafka shows up, they fuck, and Himeko is not in the mood for that tonight. Some part of her wants more than that. But she knows that's not possible, after all, who would want someone who sees her own death whenever she closes her eyes?

The three times that Himeko has a nightmare and Kafka is there to wake her with milk for her coffee, and the one time that she isn't.

The first time Himeko meets Kafka, she waltzes onto the Astral Express with a story on her lips and not even the slightest desire for a drink.
"I have a story for you, darling."
The striking stranger walks right up to the bar, leaning against the solid wood countertop with a dangerous smile on her face and exhaustion in her eyes.
This is not how it's supposed to go.
or, Himeko's a barista on a train that takes the dead to their final destinations. Kafka somehow manages to come and go as she pleases.
