Summary
Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

"The ironic thing about the “rivalry” was that, by the rules of the Games, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander would never, could never, actually face each other. Could never be Reaped together, never fight one another, never find out which of them would have been the Victor if they ended up in the same arena. At first, this made him furious. Later, this became the third and last item on the list of things he didn’t curse the universe for.
On the nights when Ilya felt his mother’s absence like a lance, when the blank dread started to creep in and he understood her a little too well, when his hands were on some beautiful, rich Capitolite and he wondered why the hell he bothered to behave to keep Alexei and his father alive—on those nights, Ilya narrowed all of his attention to this. The world was hell, but at least he would never have to know if he could have killed Shane Hollander. Or know if Shane Hollander could have killed him."

Summary
Shane Hollander is 18 years old and a beta when he first competes at World Juniors in Saskatchewan. Shane's only expectation is to bring home gold. Instead, Shane unexpectedly presents as an omega during the gold medal game against Russia. Luckily, his rival Ilya Rozanov is there to help Shane, which is a good thing because Shane knows nothing about being an omega. Rozanov kindly offers to extend his stay to help Shane through his first heat.
Only months later, Shane discovers that he came home with a whole lot more than a silver medal and an unwanted new designation. Somehow he's carrying the baby of a man who lives on the other side of the world. A man who never offered his phone number and doesn't have any social media to speak of.
Somehow Shane is going to have to find a way to explain why he's suddenly pulling out of the 2009 draft, come to terms with giving up hockey and caring for a baby completely alone. All while desperately wishing he could share the joys of first smiles and the stress of sleepless nights with the alpha he's never quite been able to forget.

Shane gets pregnant the first time they meet, but doesn't find out until Ilya is back in Russia with no way to contact him.

Three weeks had passed since they had seen each other last. Three weeks since that night at a random Montreal club, when Shane realized, too late, that whatever he thought could happen between him and Rozanov, was an illusion. But he was no fool. Shane had caught the flicker of pain on his rival’s face as he kissed that gorgeous stranger, almost as if he had wished his tongue were dancing in someone else's mouth. But he also saw the rage. That raw stare that promised 'I will never forgive you'.
“Did you see the news about Rozanov?”
Shane bit down on the string of his hoodie as he checked the news for himself.
Ilya Rozanov, said to be engaged to a certain Svetlana Vitrova, daughter of famous Soviet hockey goaltender Sergei Vitrov.

Right after episode 4, Ilya is rumored to be engaged to Svetlana, which is enough to make Shane lose his mind.
