He tried to understand, he really did, but all he saw was a big angry man and a terrified little boy, and there was no questioning who was in the wrong there. So, he did what he never figured he would do.
"Leave him here," he said. "But don't come back."
And come back he didn't.
or, John leaves Dean at Bobby's at just ten years of age, taking only Sammy with him. Life goes on and kids grow up, and years later Dean is not the man John Winchester raised and Sam is not Dean's little brother.
