According to Google, the steps for curing a broken rib include resting, taking pain medication, icing the problem areas, not wrapping your ribs in anything tight, and taking deep breaths to avoid pneumonia.
Kaito thinks those sound pretty easy, all things considered. The night after his fight with Malice and Menace, he returns to his apartment through the window, strips from his suit and kicks it under his bed, and drops into bed, the pain sending full-body chills through him until sleep finally claims him. When he wakes up the next morning, the pain has dulled considerably, but when he checks out his ribs in the bathroom mirror, he sees that green and purple bruises have bloomed across his upper body. They’re hideous, and when Kaito pokes them, they feel tender.
Go figure.

“Maybe,” Kaede admits. She leans in and kisses Maki on her bottom lip. “I’m not gonna lose, though! You know me, I don’t know when to quit.”
Yeah, well, neither do our boyfriends, Maki thinks, but she sighs instead of saying it, shaking her head, prompting Kaede to let out another wave of giggles. Kaede climbs out of Maki’s lap as Rantaro and Kaito step into the dining room, the banana bread steaming and sliced, oozing chocolate onto the white plate they set it on. Kaito puts it down and nudges it towards Maki with his eyebrows raised, as though to say, First pick, birthday girl, so Maki huffs and takes a slice off the end. As she nibbles on it, the warmth and the sweetness of the chocolate and banana settling against her tongue, she smiles, full and genuine, and looks up at Kaito.
“It’s good. Thank you.”
Kaito beams. “Of course! Anything for you!”
Why does he say things like that? Maki ducks her head and groans and pretends like she can’t hear Rantaro and Kaede giggling as she pulls her hair in front of her face.
