If you told me a year ago that I would not only read a BKDK fanfic and enjoy it—I WOULD’VE LAUGHED IN YOUR FACE but here I am. Cherry Gatorade on my titties.
Jokes aside, I never really enjoyed this ship and didn’t understand the appeal until… I rewatched MHA when season 7 was coming out and kinda saw the vision…. I saw the idea…. So like any normal person, I went straight to fanfication to finally sway me, I searched up the ship, (ignoring the BKDK heat and omegaverse top searches on google) read the like two of the fanfics which didn’t really do much ngl…. One was an angel and demon AU which was interesting enough but I didn’t get attached and one was a some kind of slam poetry modern AU which was okay but also didn’t get me attached
Some people say that third times the charm, so I went to have one last shot and ended up clicking on FROM THE SIDELINES
At first, I was suspicious so I just skimmed the first chapter and it was going pretty well but got me hooked was the title DROPPP lmaoaoo yall I love when an author does that well I instantly knew that I NEEDED to read this
Anyways, the more I read, the more I fell in loveeee with this fanfic, this author is really good at describing the setting and the small town had such cozy retro vibes which is something I didn’t know I needed
Speaking of retro—the author really loves using 80s music in her fic (which was perfect timing cuz I got into listening to 80s music right before that) and somehow I didn’t wanna pull the trigger or punch my wall from the second hand embarrassment so I would say that’s a win!! There’s even a playlist that she made for the fic so if you’re the type of can listen to music with words and read then knock yourself out!
One thing that really kept me hooked was the family dynamic between Izuku and Inko, his mom, and wowww… nah it felt a personal attack everytime they interacted idk if the author based it off of something similar in her life but damn it felt like it because it seemed so personal and real. Definitely one of the best and well fleshed out things about FTS.
NOW TO THE THICK OF IT, the ROMANCE, I actually enjoyed it a lot, Izuku and Bakugo help each other grow and evolve A LOT, like wow they really bring out the best in each other esp Bakugo to Izuku but Izuku also helps Bakugo a fair share, you can tell there’s chemistry when they interact, their scenes are always very well written, the author knows how to use the setting to add more to their relationship and make them interact. There’s a lot of self discovery and adventure with these two which I loveddd. I would say this is a great slice of life.
Aside from the clichés (which aren’t half bad cuz it fits the fic) and veryyyy embarrassing moments that kinda scattered around the fic (which I’m sure were done on purpose but DAMN I HAD TO GET UP AND PUT MY PHONE DOWN SEVERAL TIMES) I would say the romance is great if you enjoy a good HS romance with enemies(?) to friends to lovers with a good amount of drama, it’s great!
In terms of smut and any sexual scene, uhmmm it wasn’t for me so I just skimmed through it— I would say that it was lowkey out of character since I expected more love and awkwardness since they both seemed to care about each other but it kinda felt like animals going at it ngl 😭 but I see what the author was trying to do and see the vision!
The author is also really good at using symbols to their advantage and made every scene more memorable with that! So kudos!
But yeah! Love this fic, it really changed my perspective and mindset about a lot of things. I would say this one of the only works that really made me think about my own life and helped me change as a person WHICH IS CRAZY. but yeah, amazing work
