It was almost pathetic, the number of times he'd called to the point of knowing the series of digits by heart, even of being able to enter them with his eyes closed. Many weeks had passed, many weeks where he hadn't even been able to hear the sound of his voice without his whole respiratory and cardiac system going haywire.For a moment, he allowed himself to imagine a world in which the phone would ring once, twice, and after a few more rings, pick up. What would he even say, then?
