Baby, I've been waitin' my whole life
For you and I
—Beyoncé, “II Hands II Heaven”
Was listening to John Adam’s Naïve and Sentimental Music, and especially the cover of “Down Under” by the Tones and I, hence the title.

Summary
…she had regained what I thought she had lost forever, the magical sadness which had drawn me to her, the thwarted look that had seemed to say, “Surely I was made for some other purpose than this?”
—Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited
This was a response to a half-jokey tumblr prompt for a late 18th-Century fanfic on Marianne x Hélöise. Post-canon. Faithful to the world of the film.
August 1, 1794
It is five years after the French Revolution and nearly two years into the new Republic. The king and queen are dead. Marat is dead. Robespierre is dead. The Terror is over but the “women’s clubs” that the Jacobins outlawed remain shuttered. The price of bread is beginning to stabilize.
Marianne has found accommodation in this new order and is still gainfully employed as a painter. She has maintained this largely by being politically flexible with the leaders of competing factions in the National Convention.
Work is work. She still takes on a small number of pupils out of an atelier on rue du Chaume (now the rue des Archives), in what was the aristocratic Marais. The neighborhood is going through what we would now call a bit of transition.

I know someone who kisses the way a flower opens, but more rapidly.
—from “I Know Someone,” by Mary Oliver. Felicity: Poems (2015)
Short AU. More Adèle x Noémie pillow-talk explorations. Some very minor angst but a lot more waffy / sexy.
The principal actors from Portrait de la jeune fille en feu / Portrait of a Lady on Fire, in a relationship. Paris, the summer, Adèle Haenel's apartment in the 10ème.
Same continuity as my other Noémie x Adèle fics Soyez sérieuse / The Anniversary and Chanmé

Summary
“The sublime grants pure feeling.”
—Goethe, on describing the sight of the alps, in a 1778 letter to Charlotte von Stein.A short tale of transitions,
told in fragments:
Between object and subject.
Between regarding and being observed.
Between thinking and feeling.
Between listening and being heard.“vous avez rêvé de moi?,” ou “vous avais rêvé de moi?” Between the present indicative and the imperfect indicative.
Or if you like, the change from minor to major key in Vivaldi’s “Summer: III. Presto,” that plucky violin solo in the middle that has Héloïse smiling triumphantly through her tears.
But as this is a happy Noémie Merlant x Adèle Haenel AU, the heavy notes in G Minor that resume at the end of that piece don’t ever come back.
Same continuity as my other Noémie x Adèle AU Chanmé

Summary
Short AU one-shot involving relationship between actresses playing Marianne (Noémie Merlant) and Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) Portrait of a Lady on Fire / Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Based on real-world events (the Toronto International Film Festival), real locations and real destinations but a wholly speculative love story that existed in illustrated form on my tumblr.
