Summary
Two flights of stairs, some school related small talk from Jonathan, and a maze of a hallway later, Will and Jonathan arrive at Will’s dorm: room 327. There’s a small cork board on the door holding a piece of paper with two names on it. William Byers & Dustin Henderson. The first name is obviously his, and the second one seems familiar, but Will is bad with names, so he could be confused. He turns to bid his goodbyes to Jonathan, when the words on a cork board across the hall on the door of 330 catch his eye. A name. Specifically, Michael Wheeler.
You’ve got to be fucking kidding.
At the Melville Academy for Boys, Will and Mike have found themselves consistently around each other, feeding a year long rivalry that neither of them know exactly how it started. After a bitter end to his friend group from the year before, Will is determined to find a new friend group and have a better year. However, this task might prove difficult with the existence of Mike Wheeler, as well as a mysterious poltergeist-like presence looming about.
Aka: if a byler fic had the vibe of the Dead Poets Society but a different plot and happier.

Summary
"I'm glad I went," Mike murmurs near Will's ear.
"Had fun?" Will asks playfully.
"Oh, yeah," Mike stretches sarcastically.
They stay like that for a little longer than necessary, then reluctantly separate, still looking at each other. Will can't hold the eye contact for long, and turns away, biting down a smirk.
"Goodnight, then," he breathes out.
"Yeah. Goodnight," Mike nods nervously and smiles. That same stupid dorky smile.

Summary
“I have to go, actually,” he says finally, though the expression on Mike’s face plainly tells him he knows he’s lying, and had expected the response before it came. “Like, now. Preferably.”
“Oh,” Mike says, decidedly disappointed but not exactly surprised as Will tosses a twenty onto the bar and hops out of his seat in one fluid motion. “Oh, well- wait, Will, hang on, I want to talk to you-”
“Yeah, well,” Will huffs, adjusting the collar of his jacket, “thanks, but I’ve actually had quite enough of hearing about what you want for one lifetime, so. I think I’ll pass on this one.”

Summary
“Oh, come on,” Will says, struggling to keep his voice neutral in a different way. His mouth is dry, and he hates Mike for it even more. “Is this what it’s going to be like this summer?”
Mike looks back at him, considering, lips pursed in an effort to shut down the smirk that Will knows is fighting to break free. Will doesn’t dare to let his gaze catch there, focusing instead on holding Mike’s stare, because this, too, is a game.
Five years into a rivalry with bittersweet origins, the only thing Mike and Will want is to beat each other at this summer’s camp counselor competition. But being back at camp is dredging up old memories, and as Mike and Will lose momentum and gain something else entirely, it becomes increasingly clear that one summer can change everything.

Summary
In the end, it doesn’t matter. None of it fucking matters. Because what’s really in control is the tension. This elusive string tied between their chests that’s always changing length. Right now it’s so short and taught and strong that Will can’t imagine resisting it. So really, it was never a matter of if he would. Just when. When will he fold? When will he let go and let himself follow Mike into the water?
He dares to glance down at his knees, where he can see Mike’s fingers peeking out from behind his calves (as if he needed that visual reminder that they’re touching), and then back up to meet Mike’s expectant gaze.
He’s going to do it. He’s such a fucking idiot.

Summary
Mike hates this time of year.
The leaves have all fallen, covering the ground like puzzle pieces in their rightful places, so the trees are bare, naked, and dead. It hasn’t yet snowed to round out the rugged edges of the town; there are still sharp edges everywhere Mike looks — and trust him, he looks — and it feels like the atmosphere is eternally toying with him by turning dark with rumbling clouds, only to dissipate within an hour. It also gets dark at four p.m. for no reason other than to piss him off.
The world is, Mike decides, no better now than it was when it was ending.
mike's been living in hawkins since the world stopped ending, even though his friends left him behind.
