Your heart was pounding. You felt frozen to the spot, a rabbit corned in by a fox. It didn't matter if the caretaker claimed they wouldn't eat a human. It didn't matter if she was having a lovely chat with these things, that they could talk at all. You were scared of this creature blocking your exit. Existentially burdened and with the vague feeling you might throw up.
Suddenly “Vervain” moved, her claw stretching towards you, and you jerked back. She stopped, tucking it back against herself. “I like humans,” she said quietly. “Stay here.”
“Wh-what?” You stammered, placing a hand to your chest.
“Vervain,” Gladys warned.
