Her sniper’s eye raced ahead of the quickly-building panic as she interrogated each and every dark corner for the danger she knew to be hidden within the deepening shadows; shadows that slowly unfurled with each unsuccessful pass, reaching towards her like the fingers of a hand insincere in its promise.
Glowing purple motes of light joined the panic stalking behind her gaze as it continued to frantically jump from shadow to shadow in her growing desperation, their incandescence highlighting cracks in walls once foolishly thought impregnable — her safe haven a fallacy.
The shadows loomed closer, the phantom skirted detection, the aimed rifle cocked, and her eyes slammed shut as she surrendered to her utter defenselessness.
