Summary
Day was just a boy when he saw what barbarism does to Empire; he saw the Star Bridge collapse, killing a hundred million of his subjects.Though this left its own scars, as Trantor itself is the witness, Day grew up refusing violence and striving for peace. He knows himself different from his ruthless predecessors—and now he knows how crucial hiding that difference is for his survival. Because if Empire is infinite, it also means he is just one ephemeral piece in a game far bigger than him.
Serenya Vahlon belongs to a lineage as old as the galaxy— or so the stories go. After her mother’s death, she’s haunted by visions of a girl with scarred cheeks and a man predicting her House’s fall. She sets course for Empire’s center. Arriving on Trantor under the pretense of peace, her presence disturbs the very force holding Empire together. Day sees her as a threat wrapped in beauty. She sees in him not just a ruler, but a fracture in the façade, an Emperor struggling to remain both man and myth. As visions grow stronger, and Serenya draws closer to the imperial heart, they must choose: preserve what was built by fear—or risk everything for something greater.
But love, if that’s what this is, was never part of the plan.
