Ed knows this. He knows he can’t blame anyone. He won’t do anything rash. He’s not eleven and an idiot anymore.
“It’s—I should’ve been here. I can’t believe I wasn’t here. I did the same fucking thing as Hohenheim—she had to”—Ed is choking on his words, now, and salt stings his eyes and blurs his vision—“she had to suffer alone.”
Al’s hand tightens over his. “That’s not true, Brother. You came back. You were there when she—when Winry said goodbye.” Al’s voice is choked, too. “I’m sure she didn’t feel alone when she—left.”
Ed lets out a sob. It sounds ugly and broken and he misses Winry’s laughter so much.
So much.

Seven days…
That’s potentially all he has left of this endearingly strange connection they’ve been building. One where he’s not Edward’s commanding officer, and Edward’s no longer his subordinate. Not that Edward ever took a huge amount of direction or placed any value in Roy’s authority beforehand. He can almost picture him, strong and defiant, using his young body to complete the transmutations for his State Alchemist’s exam.

It is only a matter of time when a bunch of suitable alchemists would be picked for Ed to choose. Mustang is fairly sure he’d be one of the candidates, but that doesn’t soothe his alpha’s rage at the thought of another alpha challenging him over Ed.

Roy's been extra sappy and romantic and sweet all day and Ed's kinda freaking out about it. He doesn't know what's going on. Ed's birthday was earlier in the month and Roy's isn't until July. It's not their anniversary, that'll be in September—as long as things keep going well. He really hopes things keep going well. He doesn't think it's any other kind of anniversary or an important date, but he can't be one hundred percent sure. And he can't just ask Roy something like that because then he'll feel like even more of an asshole boyfriend for not remembering something important. So Ed's just going to have to hope Roy will say something about it on his own. Somehow. Oh, let's face it—Ed's screwed. He just hopes Roy will be able to forgive him for his forgetfulness.
