    Summary

The thing about loving Max Verstappen quietly is that it requires a particular kind of discipline.
Daniel's had six years to learn it. He's also had three weeks to carry a ring around in his backpack, waiting for the right moment. The ring is titanium, from the halo of Max's 2023 car. There are four diamonds in it, one per championship, with room on the band for more.

He'd intended it as a promise. Max receives it as a challenge.

    "I want more diamonds, Daniel."

Or: Daniel gives Max a ring with four diamonds, one per championship, and room for more. Max takes this as both a love letter and a personal challenge. The paddock will never recover.

    Bookmarker's Notes

But Zandvoort was Max's home race and Zandvoort was the first real press pen, and Max walked into it in a team polo and dark jeans with the ring on his left hand, absolutely not hidden, and the first journalist who got a microphone in his face said, carefully, "Max, congratulations, can you tell us a little bit about the ring?"

Max looked down at his hand.

This was, Daniel would realise later watching it back, a critical moment. Because Max did a thing he rarely did on camera. He smiled. Not the polite corporate smile. Not the wry post-race grin. The private one. The one that lived in their kitchen. The one that was supposed to belong to Daniel.

He gave it to the journalist. He gave it to the whole world.

"It is from Daniel," Max said. "It is titanium. From the halo of my 2023 car. The one I called Rocky. Daniel made it into a band."

A small sound went around the media pen. A collective oh.

"And there are four diamonds," Max went on, holding his hand up higher so the cameras could see. "For the four championships. That is what they are for. One each."

    "That's very beautiful, Max-"

"Daniel says he will continue to add a diamond for each championship."

    There was a beat.

Max's smile shifted. It did not get bigger. It got… Daniel, watching this back on his laptop in a café in Monaco, would put a fist over his mouth at this exact moment, it got colder. Or not colder. Harder. The smile of a man who had just looked at a mountain and decided it had personally insulted him.

"I want more diamonds," Max said.

    The pen went completely silent.

Max said it simply. Conversationally. Like he was commenting on the weather. His eyes, though. His eyes were doing the thing.

    I want more diamonds.

Someone, somewhere in the back of the pen, made a small audible oh no. It was later identified as a Sky Italia journalist. He denied it. The audio was unambiguous.

The next question was, bless whoever asked it, "Max, can you tell us a bit about how you and Daniel got together-" but the clip that would run on every broadcast and every social feed and every morning show for the next two weeks was already locked in, the smile, the eyes, I want more diamonds. Lando would watch it back in his driver's room and put his head down on the desk and laugh until Oscar came to check on him. Lewis would watch it and send Daniel a voice note that was just mate, mate, what have you done, mate. George would watch it and feel a chill go up his spine that he could not, he would later tell his engineer, rationally explain.

Christian watched it in his office.

    He watched it three times.

Then he called Helmut Marko and said, very quietly, "Helmut. We need to fix this car."

    The upgrades helped.

    “You look really nice.”

Haruki was wearing a light short coat over a red sweater and dark jeans, with a soft-looking plaid scarf hanging on his neck. He looked nice. Autumn colors looked really good on him; Akihiko had always thought so.

“Thanks. Lock up behind me, okay? I might be home late.”

“Oh.” Akihiko didn’t know what made him say it. “Got a date?”

“As a matter of fact, I do.”

Haruki is going out for a date. Akihiko does his best to send him off.
