Still fully embraced in each other’s arms, Charlie ran his fingers through the back of Nick’s hair – which had recently been cut. And Nick took the opportunity to breathe in the scent of Charlie’s hair – which was starting to grow longer. Neither of them picked up on these subtle changes in the moment – too wrapped up in the thrill of just being in each other’s presence again – but those subtle changes were actually proof that they had survived three very difficult weeks apart. Proof that they could be apart without completely falling apart. Proof that there was still room for them to grow, or to change, even if those changes went unnoticed in the moment. Which is good, because there would be many more difficult weeks in their future that they weren’t aware they would need to prepare for.
