Summary
Mike Schmidt, in coping with the aftermath of the toy animatronics rampage, has spent the past six months slowly rebuilding his and Abby's lives back together, but at a hefty cost, watching his body slowly reverse all progress he had made to finally feel like himself in the world.
Michael Afton has always understood machines better than humans (their errors were much easier to fix than humans'), but through unconventional means, Michael discovers a surprising overlap between the eldest Schmidt and the animatronics he needed to mend. Now this, he wanted to understand.

“Next time,” Mike says, “you warn me.”
Michael hesitates, then nods. “Next time.”
It sounds like a promise. Or at least the closest thing Michael is willing to give.
Mike glances down at his watch.
6:05 a.m.
“Shit,” he mutters. “It’s already past time to leave.”
Michael looks up from where he is gathering his boxes and tools, movements unhurried, like the night has not taken anything out of him at all. “Well,” he says calmly, “I’ll see you tonight, Mike.”
The use of his name still catches him off guard.
“Yeah,” Mike replies after a second. “See you tonight.”

Summary
Right before the events of the second movie Michael obsesses over Vanessa and the death of William. As he makes his way over to the old Afton family home he recounts memories of his and Vanessa’s upbringing. Michael had ran away from home as a teen, memories of which make way for feelings of guilt and jealousy.
Michael’s hope of rekindling the relationship with his father again was squandered because of William’s death two short years ago. After seeing his father’s killer at Vanessa’s house, Michael starts spiralling.
All that he wants is revenge on Mike but fate twists itself in unexpected ways.
