For a moment, Shouta’s words don’t really register, and Hizashi just starts to nod. He’s trying to catch a particularly recalcitrant meatball with his chopsticks too, and after the twenty-something hours shift he just pulled, the food is pretty much all he can focus on.
The meatball slips through his grasp again and Hizashi sighs — he should probably stab it instead, even if that means Shouta will definitely mock him for his lack of coordination.

There is indeed a girl sitting on the sofa in front of the table. Her blonde hair are undone and falling down her shoulders; her hands are covering her face, but Battler knows exactly what her eyes and nose and mouth look like, having seen them on seemingly two different people in the course of the day. She’s wearing a boy’s uniform— so it all clicks for Battler rather quickly, although he can’t think of a reason; he really is a quick-thinker, although perhaps not when someone keeps cackling above his ear.

How do you ask this sort of thing? Kanji tries to articulate hey if you're a guy do you still like guys or is it girls or some other thing somehow and is it related or is that a separate deal, fumbles this halfway out his mouth, and somehow comes out with, “Do you have, uh, feelings?”
“What?” Naoto asks, too befuddled to even look offended.

so naoto's a girl, and kanji's a boy. that means it's fine if he asks her up to the roof, right? wait he hasn't even confessed yet why does she suddenly look so uncomfortable
(or: naoto investigates the mystery of the missing gender with the help of his trusty watson, being kanji, who didn't know he was a watson.)
