Summary
Charlie Spring is attacked and left with serious injuries, he can't remember what happened or who hurt him, at first.
He's now able to go back to school and tries to move on from this life altering event, but Nick Nelson is acting suspiciously nice and Ben Hope has stopped ignoring him.
None of that really matters to Charlie though, it feels like he's drowning and he's not able to swim.

What if Nick already figured out he was bi, and no one knew Charlie was gay yet?
Also Ben Hope is way worse to Charlie, both with his physical actions and the things he says.
Or
Charlie couldn't do it, couldn't risk things with a stupid crush. Was that what it was? He hadn't felt this way with Ben, he didn't turn bright red whenever Ben looked at him, his whole body didn't tingle whenever they innocently touched.
No, Charlie thinks, I cannot fall for Nick. Fucking. Nelson.

When a bunch of year twelve rugby lads had bullied him into an attempted suicide. But Nick had never said one bad thing about him. As a rule, Charlie stayed far away from jocks, but even though they had never spoken, Nick had never seemed to be like the rest.

Charlie Spring is a poet/barista, working in the local queer coffee shop with Isaac and Sahar. The owners, Nathan and Youssef also use the shop to sell queer books and art, including a small book of erotic poems by Francis Primavera. Nick has just moved into the neighborhood after ending a relationship when they realized they were going in different directions. Trying to explore his new community, Nick picks up a few things to read at the local coffee shop. He can't help noticing the cute barista, but his heart (and libido) have been captured by an author he's never met. Or so he thinks.
