He nearly choked on his burger. “I have never been turned into a plant!” he protested thickly, swallowing as quickly as he could. “I just thought—y’know—it was something you two had in common!”
“You were turned into something else, then,” Nico surmised. Great. He’d been quiet all conversation, dodging all the questions, and now he and Thalia found common ground just to interrogate Percy. “What was it? When was it?”

Post-The Sword of Hades, Nico joins Thalia and Percy for cheeseburgers. To break the awkward silence, Percy tries to think of something the two have in common. It doesn't go well.

They've grown closer than Nico's ever been to anyone, known each other for years now, and still his fingertips make a yearning roar in Nico's chest, a dull and permanent ache for that something, whatever it is, that could satisfy this hunger. He doesn't know what it is that he's searching for, but he thinks if he started with Will's hands on his skin and went from there, he would find it, somewhere along the road he's only known in his thoughts, only in his dreams.

The sun is beating down on them, on Nico's exposed collarbones and the back of Will's neck, and for once, Nico learns to let it. He learns to let the heat seep into his skin, to accept it into his veins and into his soul, into the ragged surface of his scars and the deep brown of his eyes. He lets it build him as he grows, lets the light this boy brings become a core part of him.

Their relationship changes, from the way it was when they were fourteen, clammy hands and shy smiles, to how it is when they're nearing the edge of adulthood, working together to figure out what to do with all this love they hold.
