But the best he could do was bow his head and mutter “Perhaps.”
Marceline burst into laughter. “You’re funny.”
“What?” Simon had expected a rebuke, an angry glare or saddened sigh that he could not protect her. But Marceline was still giggling, her eyes lit up with soft laughter.

As much as he wanted to call life in the apocalypse hell, Marceline was sleeping just three feet away. He had enjoyed traveling with her, putting on fake episodes of cheers and finding dead rats in mailboxes. She was a special kind of person, the type who could still laugh when the world had gone to hell.
