The draw of sculpture was in the satisfaction of molding clay in just exactly the way she knew it should be molded. Even painting couldn’t give her that same control. But outside of the workshop, no one listened to her, Alicia least of all. They listened to Verso, of course; he’d spent his painting lessons daydreaming and come out the other side with a honeyed tongue. Clea could mold clay, bend metal, paint any image she wished exactly as she wished it. But by the time she was old enough to realize talent and dedication weren’t enough to bend the world to her will as well, it was too late.
