Lan Xichen pushes himself so hard to like Wei Ying, to pour his own wish for his brother’s happiness into the relationship, that it comes as a surprise when he finds that he genuinely does. Wei Ying is enthusiastic about so many things, and is able to tease Lan Wangji. He pouts when Lan Wangji insists on some arbitrary rule. He is warm to Lan Xichen, always inviting him to talk and listening attentively. He’s free with smiles and touches, and he is handsome.
And Lan Xichen can hear it through the walls of their adjoining bedrooms when Lan Wangji and Wei Ying are fucking.

"Hungry," A-Yuan whines, pulling at his hand. Wei Wuxian tries to focus on the vegetable display in front of him. He's got 10 credits left on the last safe account he's got access to. Half a kilo of wilted vegetables, the cheapest thing in the store, costs 15.
The potatoes are sprouted. Half of Wei Wuxian's sluggish mind wonders if that means he can bargain down the prize, while the other half is screaming that something is very wrong. They have been planet-side for around 36 hours and so far nothing adds up.
Blinking slowly, Wei Wuxian stares at the potatoes. The green sprouts seem to taunt him.
Suddenly he remembers that Shanxu, the planet they are supposed to be on, has a current ban on potatoes, due to some aggressive and rapidly mutating form of crop blight."Fuck," Wei Wuxian hisses.

When he's the only one to emerge alive from the Guanyin temple, Xichen flies directly to Gusu. The moment he arrives at Cloud Recesses, he goes to the Hanshi to take out the warded Collection of Turmoil.
He's glad now, as much as he has any capacity to be glad of anything with the state he’s in, that A-Yao never tried to use the song Xichen is now looking for. Not that he didn't wish to, Xichen is sure, but he simply didn't have enough skill, as either a guqin player or a cultivator.
The song requires precision, and a tremendous amount of power.
Lan Xichen plays it perfectly, and feels his soul drain out of his body.
Or: Lan Xichen travels back in time. He is deeply uninterested in fixing anything except for the people he cares about. For them, however, he will stop at nothing.

Lan Wangji looks down at the boy, who looks back up at him, and he’s still far too adorable for his own good. “Your father is perhaps too trusting,” Lan Wangji remarks. A-Yuan seems to consider this for a long moment before he nods resolutely in a way that tells Lan Wangji he has no idea what he means. “May I carry you?” A-Yuan is quick to let go of his leg to reach up instead, so Lan Wangji reaches down to pick him up under his arms and hoist him onto his hip where he settles heavily like a sentient sack of potatoes.

“Is someone in here, or is the laundry room haunted again?” A man’s voice calls, and it’s almost jarring how friendly it is.“Again?” Zixuan hiccups.
Footsteps on the tile, and then there’s a man frowning down at him with open concern. “Aw, bud. Are you crying? Me too sometimes.” And he pops a squat, right there in front of the sad turtle man, and Zixuan gets a close up of the riot of tattoos on his arms and peeking through the gaping rips in his jeans. “I’m Wei Ying.”
