Andrew takes Neil to the airport and ponders on when exactly his sanity became so dependent on a certain redhead's presence in his life, and why leaving him always feels like his heart is being ripped from his chest.

Summary
“Why are you being so difficult?” Neil asked, staring him down.
Wasn’t that the age-old question?
Andrew had always been destructive, more so the older he became, but he had never protected himself from the carnage. In fact, he was his own fatal victim, the one with self-inflicted wounds and a hand shoved unceremoniously through his chest with his heart in a death grip. It was therapeutic, a way to establish control. And whilst he no longer physically bled, that didn’t stop him from finding other ways to make it hurt.

Summary
“You said it’s shit.”
“I did.” Andrew agrees.
“You said it isn’t a permanent fix.”
“It’s not.”
Andrew reaches through the window, plucks the tree shaped air freshener off the rearview mirror, holds it to his nose. Neil waits, knows that it lost its scent months ago. He isn’t sure why he’s held on to it, just knows he likes the look of it dangling while he drives. It’s another identifiable feature to his car, another way to know Neil Josten drove this Subaru.
His mother would have hit him before throwing it away.
Andrew places the scentless piece of cardboard back in its spot with a delicacy that indicates understanding. A gentleness that makes Neil wonder if Andrew Minyard, with his family and his fancy sports car and his leather jacket, is also learning how to be a real person.
“I can fix it.” Andrew says, and for the first time since he came upon Neil and his unresponsive engine, he looks away.
“You can fix it,” Neil echoes, a question and a statement in one.
“Yes.” Andrew replies.

Neil’s car breaks down. Cue the cute blonde with a knowledge of cars, a cool leather jacket, and a long term crush on the helpless redhead.Bookmarked by Caliginous_Confused

Summary
"When you arrived," Andrew continued, his voice softer, almost reflective, a rare glimpse into his inner world, "you were a threat. Loud. Demanding. Reckless. You talked too much. You ran too fast. You pulled everyone into your orbit like a black hole. And you didn't leave."
Neil remembered those early days, the constant push and pull, the violence simmering under Andrew’s skin, Neil’s own desperate need for a place to belong. "I couldn't," Neil mumbled. "I had nowhere else to go."
"You always had somewhere else to go," Andrew corrected, his voice firm. "You just didn't want to. You chose to stay." He finally turned his head, looking at Neil directly. His eyes, usually so guarded, held a flicker of something Neil couldn’t quite name. It wasn't warmth, not overtly, but a deep, unwavering recognition. "You chose us. You chose this." He gestured between them, a small, almost imperceptible movement.
