Clive looked out the door with a grimace. The rain seemed to have set in, at least for the night.
“I don’t think that’s going to let up until morning,” he informed Cid.
“A…aye,” Cid muttered, eyes drifting to the hearth. “No hope of l…lighting that unless we cannibalise the whole d…damned place.”
“Which would defeat the purpose,” Clive added, holding back a wince at Cid’s stuttering, leery of triggering one of Cid’s sarcastic tirades. He was a proud man, and that had never been in more evidence than in the last few months.
“Fuck,” Cid spat, hugging himself. “Regretting my insistence on g…getting out and about now. Not the company, mind, just the f…fucking weather.”
