Summary
Decades ago, the aliens invaded and defeated humanity. But they didn't take everyone, they needed a fresh supply of host bodies for the next generations. So the survivors were settled into comfortable homes in the suburbs and raised on a healthy diet of optimistic propaganda. Now they have a system running a perfectly humane human breeding program, and people accept that eventually surrendering their body is the price to pay for good food and safe streets.
Outside, rogue villages cling to a much more precarious life, ridden with disease, hunger, and fear.
