“Go away,” Ilya said, his voice muffled by something. Shane would bend space and time to give Ilya anything, but he would not grant him this.
Instead, he pushed the door open, his heart breaking at the sight of Ilya in his massive bed, somehow looking tiny beneath the covers.
“Ilya,” he said, the name escaping like an exhale. He had so much to say. So many things that needed fixing. So many apologies he owed him.
“Shane, please-“
“I’ll go.”
“Yes. Thank you.”
“No - not… not to Montreal. To the party. If you’ll still have me.“

Summary
The prologue picks up mid-book 6, but rather than Brad posting the video to Twitter he sends it directly to the Montreal Metros. In this universe, Shane and Ilya are not outed to the world, but Shane is still kicked off the Metros team and transfers to Ottawa.
This fic follows Shane and Ilyas first year as teammates, settling into their lives together after getting secretly married over the summer. In this timeline, Shane learns to heal from the wounds of being outed to his team, Shane and Ilya get to ease into being a full-time couple before being thrust into the spotlight, and they get to navigate coming out on their own terms.
After a decade of the world being too hard on them, I just really wanted my favorite husbands to find a soft place to land. While the road is still long and difficult, this AU is all about putting them back in control of how they want the world to see them. It also gives so many more hilarious opportunities to watch other characters react to them coming out.

Ilya feels the softness of Shane’s lips against the skin on his shoulder, feels the emotion laced in it, like 'I see you. I understand.'
“She would be very proud of you. No matter what. She loved you. I know she would be proud of everything you’ve accomplished despite everything.”
Wetness gathers in the corners of his eyes.
“Maybe.” He deflects.

“I’m sorry, but my answer is no. Someone else might be willing to switch if you ask.”
“I can’t believe—this is unacceptable! I’m going to call the flight attendant over and get this sorted out right now!”
Flustered and cornered, Shane injects his Captain Voice into the conversation. “Ma’am, I understand that you’re upset, but I paid for this seat and am going to stay here. You’ll have to find someone else willing to change places or just fly with the seat you booked. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.”
She hisses like a goddamn tea kettle, and starts to say, “You are the most selfish man I’ve ever—” when another voice behind her says, “You are blocking my seat. Move.”
Shane and the woman turn to assess the new arrival. It turns out that his seat partner is well above six feet tall, ripped as hell, and knows how to deliver an excellent bitch face. He’s also the hottest man that Shane has ever seen in real life, including a chance run-in with Jensen Ackles at a Stars game.
Or, still!famous Shane meets non!famous Ilya on a cursed flight from Ottawa to Boston and kind of (totally) falls in love with him at first sight (and first chirp)
