    Summary

When Alina discovers her arranged marriage to Aleksander Morozova, she held hope that the marriage would be a fruitful one. The kind portrayed in the books and movies- the kind others would write books and movies about. One that was harmonious, happy and would last a lifetime. A marriage that would be different than the one her parents had.

    In sickness and in health.

    Until death do us part.

Upon meeting him, however, her hopes are quickly dashed.

It's okay, though. Alina may never have the perfect marriage, but that doesn't necessarily mean she won't have love.

    -

"You told me you wouldn't love me. That I’m free to take as many lovers as I wanted."

Alina tilts her head to the side, eyebrows furrowed in clear confusion as she watches him.

"And so forgive me if I don't understand why you're so angry that I did."

“Your court can wait, we need to talk first.”

The music slows slightly, around them people changing partners and her husband’s hand on her waist is stronger than any shackle.

    “About what?”

“About you and the lady-in-waiting you clearly much rather want to be dancing with.”

“We shall be married.” His voice was strong but without malice. She should have seen that coming.

Alina laughed. She threw her head back and laughed at the absurdity.

“It’s a perfectly reasonable request.” He echoed her words from earlier. “Rulers solidify treaties and ensure peace through marriages all the time.”

She blinked. He was right. And he was beautiful when he was like this, impassioned, sure. She hated him for it.

    OR

When Alina surrenders herself to save her people and everyone she loves, she finds herself at the mercy of the Darkling. To her mounting horror she realizes he isn't at all the monster he seems. Or perhaps he's exactly what he seems, but just not to her.

“You mean to tell me that you don’t feel better after our last…encounter?”

Alina flushed pink at the memory. “I’d feel better if you took that piece of my amplifier out of your hand and let me have it to myself, thank you very much.”

“So you can use it to ruin me, Little Saint? I hardly think so.”

    “I wouldn’t—”

Aleksander stared at her: a challenge. “Wouldn’t you?”

Or: Five times that Alina bent and one time that she broke.
