The girl blinked at him. With the certain tone of someone who already knew the outcome of a bet, she said, "This is your horse now, right? You know that he's sick, cursed by an old baba and infected by a seed.
"Well, he's my little brother. And I'm going to cure him."
Tommy's lashes fell low over his eyes, pensive. He lowered the gun.
She may have been crazy, but gypsy witches generally were. It was as good a fucking reason as any.

But before she can say anything, before she can open her mouth and set the record straight, she hears it.
A murmur as loud as a scream from somewhere in the tomb silent bridge.
“That whole Merchant of Death thing,” someone off to the side faux whispers, “makes a lot more sense now.”
It echoes across the bridge like a gunshot.

Summary
Months after the Avengers' dispute in Germany, the team returns to the US and moves back into the tower. As always, everyone pretends that nothing happened. Tony is just fine with this. He's used to pretending, and he'll be damned if he lets any of them see him flinch.
Tony's the bad guy, after all. He's used to it. He's fine with it. He's good at it.
Only now, there's something far worse loitering around the tower - The Winter Soldier. No one notices the guy at first, but when they do, Tony figures that he should have the soldier's back.
Birds of a feather should flock together, and the bad guys should start a book club.

Summary
The world keeps pushing him, demanding, because what he did wasn't enough. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but that wasn't enough, wasn't ever enough.
Tony Stark was tired. But he had a planet to protect, even if everyone laughed at him whenever the prospect of alien invasions was brought up. He could count on one hand how many people he could trust, which was disheartening but then, what else was new?

In which Tony does not, in fact, intend to take over the world.
