“Oh, uh,” Sam mumbled after surveying the table that John and Mary had set. “We need another plate.”
“Why?” John asked, confused and gruff. This was supposed to be a family dinner for the four of them, not anyone else.
“Jack needs to eat too,” Sam just said as if that name should mean anything to John.

John looked at them carefully for the rest of their meal. The way his sons were sitting so close even though they were not even sitting on the same side of the table. They were in tune so much it scared John a little.Sam constantly kept an eye on the boy too, refilling his water and smiling at him whenever he made a joke. It felt almost like he was intruding on a family of their own, like… and John could finally place why Sam reminded him so much of Mary here, it felt like Sam was mothering Jack, like he was their child.
