When his hand moved to grab the reins, our bodies interlocked, curved against each other, the way a man might with a woman in bed. I closed my eyes, recalling the position, wanting for a moment not to have known anything about it. Even wanting this moment then to be the first I knew of that kind of closeness, how a man might be. His fingers brushed my leg slightly, and he took the reins in hand.
“What’s your name, by the way?”
“Elain,” I said.
“Elain,” he said. Repeating it then softer to himself, as he sat up again. “Elain.”
Then the horse pushed off. I didn’t have the energy to counteract the force and fell backward a bit into him, his hand grabbing my hip to steady me wordlessly. It was the kind of move that made me think he’d had girls up here before. The swift surety, the lack of awkwardness, to feel a woman in such places, and he didn’t react at all. Grabbed me, then let go.
