“You probably do not think this is cruel,” GLaDOS says suddenly, not taking her gaze from the mouse for a second, “After all, you have such enormous capacity for cruelty, I doubt you can recognise mistreatment even when it is right before your eyes. However, a normal human with basic abilities of empathy, love, and compassion, would correctly identify my treatment of this animal as cruel.”
Chell says nothing.
“However, if this experiment were to be submitted to an ethics committee, it would receive full approval. Cruelty, in and of itself, is not wholly banned in science, after all. It is simply needless cruelty, the kind you excel in, that is not permitted. What I am doing is necessary for testing conditions. What I do is the only way for knowledge to progress.”

It was just a job. In and out, outlaws and cowboys and sheriffs be damned.

"You're from the city. What would you know?" Sheriff Ryujin scowls, shoving her hands into her pockets.
Sayeon thinks of gunshots echoing in desert emptiness with but a corpse and the lone tumbleweed to soften the sound.
There is a rage within her, but it is easily suppressed with the thought of a teal bandanna.
She is not what her blood spells her out to be.
She is not cruel.
She is normal.
So instead she plasters on a smile and beams with all the light of day Jaeil will no longer get to see.
"Sheriff, please." Sayeon brushes off her partner's flinch with the clasping of her hands. "The witnesses, if you will."

Summary
And Ryujin is her fucking Frankenstein at this point, with how many times Sayeon’s brought her reanimated corpse back to life.
Again and again. She scrapes bottom and then digs another two feet deeper and Sayeon’s sure she’ll pay the price for it later down the line but right now the thought of being alone swallows up her typical sturdy reasoning. (She’s cheating life and she knows you don’t get to make that bargain without losing something in the process.)
But it doesn’t matter. Again and again and again, she snaps her fingers and Ryujin opens her eyes. Blue washes over the world as Ryujin’s cells stitch themselves back together across time. Sayeon brings her back to life just to have her spit in her face and trample over her ideals and then wonders why she does it at all.
The alternative scares her more than the reality though she isn’t quite sure why. But she can’t lose Ryujin—she just can’t.
She’ll rewind time as many times as it takes.
