You wish Ellie were here to walk out of school with you, to laugh at how she was a bad influence on you, to take your mind off the pain. To take your mind off the trouble you’d be in when you got home.
To ride on her skateboard on the road next to the sidewalk, with her guitar case in hand, to smirk over her shoulder and sarcastically suggest doing a kick flip. All while you worried about her dropping her guitar or breaking her neck.
You wished for a lot of things as you walked alone, not sure where you were going, but knowing where you wanted to be.
As you walked, you slipped your phone out of your skinny jeans’ front pocket and opened it, tapping on the messenger app, and double-tapped on Ellie’s contact.
You barely heard the first ring as you lifted it to your ear before the call picked up. Nearly sighing with relief as her voice filled your ear. Your shoulders slumped as the weight of your sudden half-day melted like butter on hot toast.
“Alright, what happened?”
