    They should have hated each other. A straitlaced boy from Pennsylvania, who didn’t drink or smoke, who wrote his family every week, and who had only ever kissed one girl? And a wealthy son of a New Jersey industrial titan, who went through a bottle of whiskey a week and who was already cheating on his wife? What could they possibly find to like in one another?
    But Richard Winters watched Lewis Nixon. To be fair, he watched everyone; quiet observation was how he moved through life. But he found himself watching Nixon more closely the more he saw, as if more information gave him only more questions and never any answers. Nixon was widely regarded as a bit of an ass and the man himself obviously shared that opinion, but it was becoming clear to Dick that all evidence to the contrary—and there was a lot—Lewis Nixon was a pretty great guy.
