    “We should be what?” Ilya laughs. “Braiding each other’s hair like girls, yes?”

    “No. I just don’t think we need to be so hostile.

    “I don’t like you,” Ilya says plainly. “You are irritating, and you are boring. In two years, we will be done with hockey and college, and neither of us will have existed to each other. Let it be that.”

    (Or: Ilya Rozanov is a rich kid who has been kicked out of another university. His new university, while not bad, tries to give him a new roommate. Shane Hollander is a sweetheart who hasn't had an easy life after the loss of both of his parents. After doing some ugly things to make ends meet, all he wants is a normal, happy college experience and an education that would make his mom proud, while trying to balance the hideous things still chasing him.)

    The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.

    He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.

    “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago.

    When Shane Hollander & Ilya Rozanov spent their summers as teens in an elite hockey camp, they quickly became inseparable friends. But they lose touch when Shane moves on as a prospect for the NHL and Ilya for the KHL.

    Did the Harvard dorms completely shut down over the winter break? What about the dining hall? Shane supposed he didn’t really know. He’d never stuck around to find out, when he was younger. 

    “Okay?” 

    Coach raised his eyebrows. “So, he’s staying with you.” 

    Shane’s eyes went wide. 

    “What?” 

    “Come on, Captain,” Wiebe looked down his nose at Shane. “Try not to look too thrilled.”
