His eyes kept fluttering close, almost as if he was trying to imagine something that wasn’t there and hadn’t been there in a long time—something that would never be there again no matter how many pennies he wished on and fingers he crossed.
He felt her all time. Every moment, everywhere. It was like when he lost her the first time, except something felt sickeningly more concrete this time around. He saw her in girls that snorted when they laughed. He saw her in girls who were growing their hair out, which El was so excited to do. He saw her in tattoos and waffles and Miami Vice and purple eyeshadow and pop music.

El vanishes when the bridge collapses, and Mike’s friends force him to go to senior prom and he gets drunk and lets out all his emotions about El.

He looked into her eyes. He really looked. They shone with a shade of fawns, hints of a rich gold sparkling across her pupils.
As he looked, a smile managed to etch its way onto his face. She was smiling, her dimples curling at the corners of her cheeks. She was safe and happy, and for as long as he lived, that would be the only medicine he needed to repair his broken heart.

It’s almost an ache; tightening around her organs and replacing her lungs with butterflies, shaky and nervous and fluttering against her insides.
All she wants is to drown out the sound of the television static with Mike’s deep, warm breath against her neck, sending waves of goosebumps along her skin; to think of nothing but the two arms that’ll surely wrap around her tight and send her off into a slumber.
Mike smiles, “We can do that.”
