Summary
Only when the cozy glow of the light illuminates the room do you see it: a hairline crack right in the middle of his lip, with a fragile trickle of blood coming out. You freeze.
“Oh my god,” you exhale, the breath coming out of you like an engine sputtering, “Tell me I didn’t do that to you.”
He opens his mouth and takes a breath in, surveying you with careful, weary eyes. You would guess he considers lying, considers telling you it’s his allergies, or he tripped getting a glass of water, or he brushed his teeth too hard, something silly to keep you from spiraling. But he knows that won’t work. You’ve been together for so long and seen so much that you know the best course is always going to be telling the truth. So he shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head ever-so-slightly, confirming you did, in fact, hit him in your nightmare-clouded panic.
You have a nightmare. Steve tries to mend your pieces back together as best he can.
