Tommy stepped off the training helicopter at the Coast Guard helipad in New York, his shoulders tense and his jaw clenched. The urban air rescue training would last two weeks; for anyone else, it would just be work. For him, it was a respite. A break from Los Angeles, from the 118, from the station where every corner still smelled of Buck.
They had broken up three months ago. Not with shouting or broken dishes. With a conversation on the loft balcony that lasted fifteen minutes and left Tommy feeling like the air had been ripped from his lungs. Buck had asked him to move in together, but fear paralyzed Tommy. He was afraid Buck wasn't truly "ready," that his bisexuality would make him doubt himself someday, that he himself (Tommy) wouldn't be enough after years of hiding and being hurt by the closet. That "you'd end up breaking my heart without meaning to" he'd said to Buck when they broke up still echoed in his head.

Evan "Buck" Buckley had just turned 18. He was what everyone would consider the perfect guy: a decent player on the school team, tall, blond, with a charming smile and blue eyes that effortlessly captivated. He was popular with the girls and envied by most of the guys at UCLA.
Tommy Kinnard had just moved to the city after his mother's job transfer. He left behind his home, his friends, and, what hurt the most, his girlfriend, Abby.
Tommy was a reserved boy with light brown hair and blue eyes as intense as the ocean. Quiet, introspective, and with an air of melancholy that contrasted sharply with Evan's lightness and charisma.
But sometimes opposites don't just attract... they also find each other at just the right moment. And what began as a simple friendship soon became something neither of them expected, but both needed.
The characters belong to the series 9-1-1 and its creator, Ryan Murphy. I only use them for writing.

Summary

Summary
It has been both the longest and shortest road, from that first kiss to where he finds himself now. The time it took for him to fully understand himself and embrace who he knows himself to be today had been a process. It was a road that required time both with and without Tommy, and as much as he doesn’t care to look back on their time apart, there are things he was forced to gain in that separation. At the same time though, it feels like just yesterday that he was living in the loft, getting jealous about the guy who had flown him and his friends into a hurricane on a hunch. In the most colloquial meaning, the days have been long for them, but the years have been short.

A soft chuckle came from behind him.
