“Sorry,” he says. He makes no point to retrieve his clothes and instead reaches over her to pick up an apple stashed in some random bag on the table where Osha sits.

“Punish me for it,” Mairon offers, stroking over his cheekbone, lingering at the bumpy edge of a scar, “if it displeases you.”
“Most of my subjects would not court punishment so openly.”
“Most of your subjects, yes.”
That makes Melkor laugh, a dark, delighted sound. Underneath Mairon he stirs, his interest piqued, his patience for conversation dwindling. “And how should I punish you, hmm?”

Summary
Before the Absolute, before the Elder Brain, before the tadpoles, there were two Chosens of the Dead Three with ambition beyond their individual means and a disdain for everyone around them: Mercy, the Drow Bhaalspawn of ambiguous origins, and Enver Gortash, the pauper who rose to lordship simply by charisma. On the surface, neither had anything in common, but when the two are both gifted a vision of the world falling at their feet by their respective gods, the two form a deadly alliance to bring about the end times.
