('You have used me… I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter…'

Snape's words echoed in Harry's mind like a ghost speaking in his ear. His eyes were watering again. Why were his eyes watering?)

(Do you know how your heart haunts me?)

(“Because of a combination of your exceedingly rare connection and because of who you are… you have managed what I would have said was impossible, Potter. The Dark Lord…”

He paused. Harry almost hoped he wouldn’t finish his statement, but he did.

“He’s fallen in love with you.”

Harry let out a horrible, strangled laugh that was much too high, and he backed up several paces like he might run away. A glance in the vanity mirror showed him that his face was bright red. “Th-th-that’s… In love? Don’t be—you can’t—that’s…”

“Don’t make the task of helping you come to terms with reality any harder than it already is,” Snape said. “You know it’s true as well as I do. He is obsessively infatuated with you, despite being consistently infuriated and confused by you as well. I doubt he will come fully to terms with how deeply he has fallen for some time, but that doesn’t mean you should suffer the same delusion. You can use this, Potter. You would be a fool not to.”

His thin lips curled, a small, near-smile. “You already have, in some regards. You’ve manipulated him multiple times, knowing he would cave to you, every time. And he has. But it’s time you acknowledge that it is far more than your soul or body he desires. He wants all of you. He wants your heart.”

Do you know how your heart haunts me?

Harry turned away. He drew in a deep breath, trying to control his flustered feelings, because his feelings—)

(“Thank you,” he breathed. Harry placed both hands on his handsome face, looked straight into his widened, red eyes, and kissed him.

Softly, slowly. Harry had never initiated a kiss like that before, and he was not disappointed in the results. After another heartbeat where Voldemort’s body went rigid, where his magic too seemed to come to a stunned standstill, he crumbled.

Voldemort’s lips parted, and he pulled Harry closer; if he was still confused—how could he not be?—he seemed content to pretend otherwise. Harry’s arms wound around his neck and relief, waves of it, washed over him.

He came. He came, he’s here.

And his magic. Voldemort’s magic warmed in an achingly gorgeous way, a rosy hue that eclipsed nearly all the black, dancing with the sparks of gold, and yes, Harry could not deny it now that the word had been thrown in his face: blooming with love.

He loves me. Even if he doesn’t know it.)

This will sound a little ridiculous, no matter how Sasuke phrases it. I see dead people is embarrassingly tacky, and I'm half-spirit seems like something Sakura might say when she's stoned sky high. So he settles for a shrug.

    Bookmarker's Notes

(Sasuke takes a breath. "Dismissed," he responds, and Neji vanishes into the trees.

And still, the ghosts linger. The Nidaime is the first to speak. "Just go easy," the Nidaime counsels. Sasuke doesn't need to ask for clarification. "You won't want to, but try."

Sarutobi smiles lightly. "I will miss you, Sasuke," he says, and he is so sincere that Sasuke can't help the flush of his face at this.)

(Sasuke leaves the ghosts before they have a chance to say anything else. It's not like this is a big surprise, he thinks. He figured he'd die out in these forests anyways, might as well be for something useful like saving Hatake goddam Kakashi's lazy ass.)

(Ishi raises his head, fanning out to his full brilliance. He is Rin's second-born, always quiet and reserved. Today, though, he breaks his silence and speaks to an outsider, the human dialect sounding strange and halting. "He will be glad to know you are well, Hatake Kakashi. It will ease his passing.")

("No one died," Sasuke announces, and draws his sword. NM HK US. By now, Kakashi will have reached Sunagakure. By now, he will have gotten the medical attention he needs. By now, he will have survived.)

(Over Pein's shoulder he sees Itachi, standing as still as a rock next to Madara.

"See," Madara says loudly, clapping Itachi on the shoulder. There's a dangerous edge to his voice. "That's how you kill him."

"He's always been persistent," Itachi says, words clipped and taut. This is my brother, Sasuke tells himself. The one who killed his mother, and the same one who told Sasuke, Crane seal to finish.)

(Pein grabs Sasuke by the face and forces Sasuke to meet his eyes. He brings out another kunai and presses it against Sasuke's face, right above Sasuke's eyebrow. "Like teacher like student, they say," he hisses, and pulls the kunai down in one ruthless swipe across Sasuke's eye. The blood almost immediately blurs his vision, and he can tell—even without a mirror, he can tell—that his eyelid has been sliced in two. Like Kakashi's.)

("As I said, he's persistent," Itachi yells back, walking over to look down at Sasuke. He crouches by Sasuke, and places a hand on Sasuke's forehead, as if checking for a temperature. It's an odd gesture, made even stranger by him saying low enough for only Sasuke to hear, "Rest, Sasuke.")

(Rin, Sasuke calls, but all that comes out is a gurgle of a sound. Sasuke turns his head to the right, sees Itachi's shoes in his view, and spits out some of the blood pooling in his mouth. Rin, he tries again, and there is a loud, loud crash overhead.)

(Sasuke gropes for his sword, but it's Itachi who hands it to him. "Rest, Sasuke," Itachi repeats again, and closes Sasuke's fingers around his sword. He doesn't let go immediately, just holds Sasuke's hand around his sword. His voice is thick, the words halting and strained as he says them. "I won't be far behind. I promise. I'll see you soon. Rest."

Sasuke nods once, movements jerky as he slips into shock. It's odd, but this is relief he is feeling, seeing his brother alive and by his side in his last moments.

Itachi's lips thin. "Close your eyes. I'm here.")

("Yeah," Itachi agrees. His shoulders move up and down, breath coming out harsh and rushed. He looks so very old all of a sudden. He looks even more exhausted than Sasuke feels. Itachi's voice is thick, but then chokes the words out eventually: "I'm here.")

Chapter 12: Kirin (he trains with the hokage)

(Kakashi leans against the back of his chair. “Yes, I do, Uchiha. I eat my pain. I occasionally drink it. It's all very grownup.”

Sasuke eyes Kakashi, unconvinced. “Yeah, Hatake, I can definitely see that you eat your pain. You’re fat as a fucking heifer.”

This startles a laugh from Kakashi, even as Inoichi glances up sharply from the map he’s studying. The Shodaime makes a noise at the back of his throat. “I still haven’t gotten used to the way he speaks to his sensei.”)

("He's..." Sasuke trails off, trying to find the right words. All he can think about is how at the very end, Itachi hadn't mocked him or reminded Sasuke about their dead and fallen. He'd said, I won't be far behind. I promise. He told Sasuke, I'm here. If there isn't honesty in what a man says to his brother in his final moments, then what is there?)

Chapter 13: Rin (Sasuke reveals where he was and has a breakdown)

    Summary

What is the world coming to when goddamn aliens give me sympathetic looks about paperwork? It was boggling. Infuriating. Maybe, a smidge validating. Nick Fury resisted the urge to swear and check over his shoulder in case Murphy was lurking.

Not that this Senju Tobirama was their typical extraterrestrial, oh no, guy had to come from a separate dimension in addition to being from a different planet.

(“I didn’t take him for a theorist,” Nick said dryly. With muscles like those, and the micro twitches that hinted at reflexes Nick was dying to see in action — albeit from a distance — he was pinging so many hand-to-hand combat alerts it wasn’t funny.

It was never funny when an unknown pinged dangerous! in his mind.)

(‘Job searching’ was a curious skill to acquire. Strictly speaking, he was working off what smaller clans had mentioned in passing; the Senju had been established in their field long enough that jobs came to them, not the other way around. Still, it was nice to acquire another skill. Learning was good for the brain, jolted it out of old patterns, opened up new lines of thought. Tobirama loved doing that.)

(“It was really nice to meet you,” Rogers said, gaze far too contemplative to match his polite smile. Tobirama is once more viscerally reminded of Hashirama.)

(Rogers turned to him with the most earnest puppy dog eyes he’s ever seen on anyone outside manipulative small children. And Hashirama. Tobirama knows in an instant this is a dangerous man, deserving of the numerous warnings in his file. He narrows his gaze right back and crosses his arms for good measure, conveying exactly how convincing he finds the innocent act.)

(Sometimes, Nick liked to watch hacked videos from the museum’s camera feed; there was just something about watching Senju have admirably restrained paroxysms of delight every time a museum intern waved a new tidbit under his nose like a cat toy. Made a man prideful to see a visitor so clearly delighted over what the people of Earth had accomplished without being a condescending prick about it like some people he had dossiers on.)

(Rogers is slightly too still in the tilt of his head to be quite natural, but he adopts a humble look swiftly enough. “Are you sure?” And if Tobirama didn’t know better that might seem like genuine concern. “I’m sure you’re a busy man; I heard you’re the museum’s sole security guard specializing in enhanced individuals. Seems a little rude to waste your time keeping me company.”)

It's a self insert fic. You know the drill.

Featuring a grumpy protagonist who wants mochi, clean socks, and to maintain possession of their life and eyeballs in that order, a troll-dad sensei who's genuinely trying to understand the pint sized weirdos he's been saddled with but isn't sure where to start, and two team mates who are honest to god twelve year olds who canonically didn't mature until after the handy dandy time skip.

(“You supply the fish for Emiyo’s, don’t you?”

He blinked, taken aback by my harsh tone. “Ah… yes?”

I nodded. “She’s been selling old fish. I thought it was odd because yours is very good, so I wasn’t sure if she’d changed supplier.”

Behind me, Sakura choked. I ignored her.)

(Holy fuck, he’d actually tried to fix my drowning problem.

“Bubblehead?” he repeated. “Ah, I suppose it could be. I hadn’t thought of a name yet.”

Holy fuck, he’d created a jutsu to try to fix my drowning problem.)

(I looked up from the water to glare at Naruto and straightened my shoulders. “I died,” I said bluntly. “My brother killed me. He killed my whole clan, I wasn’t special. The only difference was he held me in a genjutsu when he did it so it didn’t stick.”)

(Appearing directly in front of a tired, bloody Zabuza currently being held in place by an entire pack of dogs with a feral Kakashi bearing down on me, pure electric death in his hands, was, um, exactly the result I should have foreseen and somehow completely unexpected.)

(“Something this grand needs a name to live up to,” Tazuna protested. “But if you don’t like Battle Bridge… The Awesome Sharingan no Kakashi Bridge of Doom!”

You could literally see Kakashi shrivel up and die inside.)

(“Kakashi. What are these questions in aid of?”

Another pause, tenser and heavier than before. One side thinks, but doesn’t say: His brother was loyal, he was never at risk. The other side thinks, but doesn’t say: His brother traumatised him, he's a danger to himself.)

(“I’m going to get her fired,” I said, glaring at the door.

    “Bastard, no.”

“Bastard yes,” I hissed. I wasn’t sure how - a nurse was a more difficult target than a sushi-chef - but I knew what she looked like and I was good at stealth, it would be easy enough to get her name and go from there.)

(“Interesting,” the Sandaime said. “And do you know why he sought you out in particular, Sasuke?”)

(“Besides, I thought he liked Naruto?” Chouji added. He looked somewhat confused, but also vaguely flattered and doubting in the way of someone with low self esteem learning that someone else might consider them attractive.)

(There was the familiar sound of someone’s fist meeting someone else’s head, then: “Don’t use that on the bastard, idiots!”

“Why?” another voice asked, low and huskily feminine. I attempted to rectify the ear situation with my elbows, because I refused to uncover my eyes. The sharingan was activated by strong emotion and panic, I didn’t trust it. I didn’t like seeing me naked, there was no way in hell I was risking searing a bunch of toddlers doing sexy jutsu into my brain for the rest of eternity. “Is he a pervert?”)

(The joke fell flat, at least to Team Seven, and I scowled and edged a step closer to Kakashi. He was a cryptic asshole and a mostly absent sensei - at least, these days he was - but he was our cryptic asshole and I didn’t appreciate other people poking at his insecurities. I doubted Asuma did it on purpose; the tiny detail of me kawariming directly into the line of Kakashi’s chidori and almost making him relive one of the worst moments of his life had never made it to any official reports. Or unofficial ones, unless Kakashi had told Obito at the memorial stone.)

(Behind us, I could feel Kakashi holding himself in that particular i’m-not-tense-you’re-tense pose that said there was something he desperately wanted to say but was holding himself back from. Sakura and Naruto, on the other hand, had no such restraint.)

(Interlude: Man in a dog mask, dog wearing bandages, toad sage drinking too much sake)

    (“Why are you telling me.”

He finally looked up at me, yellow eyes intent and a disturbingly fascinated cast to his expression. “Because I could make you so much more, Sasuke-chan,” he said.)

(“She said I wouldn’t be able to abandon her because she would refuse to abandon me,” Kakashi interrupted, his words clipped and flatly even. “Her loyalty is not in question.”)

(I’d done what countless people had tried and failed to do, what even Danzo had had to put on hold; the Hokage was dead.)

(Interlude: Kakashi, who can’t abandon Sasuke because she refuses to abandon him)

(Itachi was there for Sasuke. It was the only explanation for why he’d broken cover when he had. He was there for Sasuke, and when he thought she’d died, he’d reacted like he’d lost everything with her.)

(Failure was not an option. Sasuke didn’t have to know what her safety cost, she only had to be safe.)

(He disabled four separate seals on Sasuke’s door and used a thread of chakra to pick the final lock.)

    (“Fuck you.”

The whole class as one snapped their heads to the silver-haired boy, still sitting with a blank expression on his face.

    “Excuse me?” Umbridge squawked.

“I’m not sure if that’s the correct phrase but I wanted to gain your attention,” Hatake answered innocently.

Harry would bet his broom that it wasn’t a translation error.

“Did I say something wrong?” Hatake continued. “I have just been told that it gains people’s attention. It worked?”)

    ("Merry Christmas, Kakashi!”

After Granger, the table chorused the greeting before eating resumed. Kakashi stared down at his plate for a moment before reaching to take his necklace off.

    “Merry Christmas.”

He still had a heavy accent but his English was coming along. He placed his necklace back on and looked up, hiding his surprise at the shocked stares.)
