Yoshiki makes a quiet, choking noise—a single breath cut short. Hikaru looks up at him, dark eyes a little wide as they peer down at him over the edge of the bed.
He’s flushed, just barely visible in the warm glow of the sun.

It's said in the Bible that when the Lord took the rib from Adam and used it to craft Eve, there upon her breast, where the rib rested beneath her skin, was Adam's name writ in the old language of angels and higher powers.
Hob wonders, sometimes, if Adam bore Eve's name somewhere upon his person, or if she spent the rest of her life wondering if God had chained a man to her that would never love her back.
Everyone is born with the name of their soulmate as a mark on their palm. Hob Gadling is born with a thousand titles in looping scrawl on his arm and a name on his palm that no one can see but him.

Summary
Hob has been around death. Living in London throughout multiple plague outbreaks and fires, as well as making a living soldiering and dabbling in banditry, will do that to you. What he doesn't know is that Death has been around Hob as well. He has no idea that when his Stranger left him that night in 1389 after their first meeting, the woman who came up to him, laid a hand on his shoulder and said, “Good luck, friend,” was Death incarnate.
Hob doesn’t know that he is one of few things in this world that has been Touched by Death and lived. Had he known this, he might not have been as confused as he is when his body slams into the floor of a dim, candle-lit cellar and he finds himself surrounded by hooded figures and a gold circle on the floor. That is all he manages to perceive before everything goes blurry and consciousness slips away from him again.
Here in the Darkness.

Roderick Burgess' spell does not summon Death, but someone who has been touched by Death. Hob Gadling ends up in his cellar instead of Dream.

Funny how quickly one got used to the strangest things. Will could by now mostly cope with the inconvenient hard-ons at random times of the day because someone in the cluster was getting laid, jerking off or just thinking about either. He most certainly could cope with being able to kiss and touch Riley when there was an ocean between them. However, he had to admit that he still had trouble coping with being aroused by a man.
