Summary
Aleg Grynz had such a bright future ahead of him. After busting his ass in school and graduating with honors at the most prestigious university his scholarships could pay for, he managed to land a cushy white-collar job working for StrataCorp, one of the four tech giants ruling the continent of DiArman. He was all too happy to leave his old life behind in his parents' homestead out in the middle of the Thunderplains, so caught up he was in the dream of moving to the big city, making a bunch of new friends, and experiencing life free from the shadows of his childhood. Alas, in the world of StrataCorp, excellence in your work only affords you more work to do, and after two years of spending all of his free time at the office, Aleg has nothing to show for it save for an email telling him he's been the victim of a mass layoff as the new Singularity model renders his and a thousand other jobs obsolete. He spends the next several months spiraling, and only when his childhood best friend finds him does he come back up for air. Thaddi, a bubbly river spirit now displaced from his home, opens Aleg's eyes to a whole new side of the city right below his feet - and, perhaps, the life he's been looking for all this time.
