“No!” Eve exclaimed. She would consider later that perhaps it would have been better to lie. “I saw— well.”
Eve had the presence of mind to cut herself off there, but her hand still moved to the Words that had haunted their relationship for years. The motion did not go unnoticed by Niko, and he somehow managed to look even more surprised than before.

Weeks go by after Rhaenyra breaks things off with Harwin before she remembers the bracelet. In a blind panic, she rush-orders a new one and shows it to Alicent the following morning as she’s hauling in their groceries.
“I should have asked you first, I know, but it’s only temporary and it’s only for emergencies anyway—” because there’s Rhaenyra’s new bracelet, fresh out of the packaging and looking exactly like the old one except for the name Alicent Hightower engraved on the inside, with Alicent’s phone number underneath. “No, sure,” Alicent says, “That’s fine.” And it is. It’s fine.
(In which Alicent may or may not be in love with her roommate, and may or may not get a bit too curious about said roommate’s knotting toy.)

“Hi,” the object of Alicent’s frustration said amiably, standing behind the till in the Student Union’s coffee shop. “How are you?”
In which Alicent Hightower drinks coffee, makes small talk, and really, really fancies her favourite barista.

And even if getting Rhaenyra in as a soloist was a staggering show of nepotism, she was still the best concert pianist on the planet. It was like when Dmitri Junior recorded Shostakovich’s second. You could get mad about it for a bit, but it was ultimately fair game. Alicent had already reached all these conclusions because Viserys had spoken to her weeks ago about programming the Concerto, which only had the unwanted effect of giving her time to turn it over in her brain like a particularly nauseating Rubix cube. Each solution of the puzzle led her to the same conclusion: she would be seeing Rhaenyra imminently, and there wasn’t a damn thing she could do about it.
After ten years apart, Rhaenyra Targaryen re-enters Alicent's life for a set of solo engagements with her orchestra. Things go about as well as expected (not very).
