“Are they fighting again?” Idril asks, wandering over to the fireplace the moment Fingolfin lets her down.

“It is what you do with siblings,” Fingolfin says, and succeeds at not laughing at the irony.

Oh, how much would be different if it were not so true. She treats him to a look full of sceptical disbelief and sets to restacking the fire.

An exploration of the Nolofinwëans in early Beleriand, and the effect that Maedhros' rescue and abdication would have had on the relationships between them, in the wake of the Ice and all its horrors.

    Summary

Then Fingon the valiant, son of Fingolfin, resolved to heal the feud that divided the Noldor, before their Enemy should be ready for war; for the earth trembled in the Northlands with the thunder of the forges of Morgoth underground. Long before, in the bliss of Valinor, before Melkor was unchained, or lies came between them, Fingon had been close in friendship with Maedhros; and though he knew not yet that Maedhros had not forgotten him at the burning of the ships, the thought of their ancient friendship stung his heart. Therefore he dared a deed which is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor: alone, and without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros; and aided by the very darkness that Morgoth had made he came unseen into the fastness of his foes.

“We are made by duty,” he says. “Hammered out by it. I don’t ask for absolution.”
    “I would not give it.”
She has noticed that sometimes he traces one finger over the scars on his face: the curve around his eye, the furrow down his cheek, the lattice of lines on his neck. It is as if he is rewriting something, over and over again.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Beautiful. The first Elwing who has really worked for me; and for why Sirion doesn’t give up the Silmaril (apart from beauty being too dangerous in itself, but this makes more sense of their spiritual aspect).
