Summary
Alex had a complicated relationship with birthdays. And with gifts. And therefore, perhaps unsurprisingly, with birthday gifts in particular. He felt quite justified in his distaste for these things, given he'd started his life by receiving the worst birthday gift in all of history.
Now, when you think of the worst gift you've ever received, it likely brings a particular disappointment to mind. An embarrassingly childish garment gifted by a loving grandmother who failed to realize you've been too old for such a thing for years, or a boring collection of socks from parents in place of the item you'd actually asked for. But unfortunately for Alex, his most terrible gift was not given by a well-intentioned grandmother or a distant and practical parent. No, his gift has been from a fairy.

The day he was born, Alex received the gift (read: curse) of Obedience. Henry is the kind-hearted prince who takes a liking to him. It's truly the stuff of fairy tales.
