The car ride back almost kills him, for all he knows.
It’s a big blur, after the moment he gets in the car, all but throwing himself in to stop the unbearable urge in him to run and hold Poppy, to beg her to stay and to never let go again. He knows he would have, had it been anyone else. He knows he would have, because Ian Grimm is a selfish, selfish man who has never put anyone’s needs before his, yet. Yet he stays in that god awful car, grips the steering wheel with all his might, and chokes on her smell that lingers in his confinement.

Poppy felt like they were playing house, like children with no concept of what adults did after dark. (Well, and if children knew what fibre supplements were, because Ian had been insisting she take those, which made her feel positively geriatric.) At night, he went into the second bedroom, which had never really acted as a bedroom until she’d had Ada - it had always been a storage area. She supposed it still was, except now it stored Ian’s stuff, which had steadily increased with every trip he made back home. If he hadn’t been so much richer than her, she might have worried that she was developing some sort of squatter situation.

Everything was touched by him, and there had been a point in her life when it had been something that made her feel bitter and unhappy and jealous, where she would think Everything is tainted by Ian and I’ll never be free but now it felt like the opposite of that, like she was stuck in this place where everything was touched by Ian but it wasn’t enough, and she needed him to be there more, and that was terrifying, and dangerous, and also really fucking bad.
“Hey, hey, hey - Pop, c’mon, this isn’t that serious.”
“No,” she agreed through her tears, “no, it’s not that serious, that’s the fucking problem, Ian! Everything between us is so unserious and it’s - it’s - it’s a fucking disaster.”
