Summary
Eddie shakes his head again, and the breath he lets out sounds closer to a sob than anything else. "You don't want a life like that with me, no one would-"
He’s not letting it go there. He refuses to let it go there. Eddie doesn’t deserve that. Buck doesn’t deserve that.
"Eddie." He says, firm and unmoving, loud enough that it seems to quiet everything around them. In one breath, rushed, like he’s running out of time, "I will stand with you between heaven and the earth. I will tell you where you are. Do you love me?"

Summary
Eddie moves to get their duffle bags but stops with his hands around the straps. He looks up at Buck and says his name without really thinking about it.
"Are you okay?" He questions, trying to gauge Buck's facial expressions. "You didn't seem that tired when we left the station."
Buck opens his mouth and hesitates, eyes searching Eddie's own for a second before his expression becomes soft, and he nods. "Yeah, I just got bored waiting in the traffic."
or Buck keeps falling asleep around Eddie and he can't figure out why.

Summary
Buck shrugs, and Eddie brushes their fingers together again. “Nothing,” he looks up at the sky and then back down to the kids running across the park, their parents trailing close behind. “Just people,” and isn’t it always? “It wasn’t horrible,” Buck adds, “just meh, y’know. It's pretty much always just meh without you there.”
“Well,” he mumbles, purposely bumping their shoulder, “I’m here now.”
Buck smiles and looks at the sidewalk, “Yeah, you are.”

Summary
“Buck,” and Eddie’s reaching out, not physically, but the sound of his own name on Eddie’s lips feels like a sort of prompt. “Can we talk about it?”
He taps his fingers against his arms, two of his fingers looping into the edge of his t-shirt sleeve. “Eddie, it’s fine,” he points at himself, “I’m fine, okay, I’m over it.” It sounds like a lie, and it hurts.
“That,” Eddie moves one of his hands to point at the living room, “was not you being ‘over it.’” It’s not an accusation, rather an honest, painful observation.
Or two years later they finally talk about the shooting.

Summary
“Hello?” His neighbour says, looking confused and honestly a bit concerned at Buck’s dishevelled presence.
“Hi, I’m—next door. Buck,” Buck says.
The guy just raises an eyebrow, hand still on the door handle. “Okay? Nice to meet you, Buck. I’m Eddie.”
Eddie. It’s a beautiful name. Simple. Short. Sweet. Buck thinks he might have hearts in his eyes. Or maybe they’re floating around his head. Is he delirious?
“I’m a firefighter,” Buck explains.
Eddie glances down at Buck’s hoodie, a navy LAFD-issue hoodie that hangs loosely over his frame. “I can tell.”
Buck exhales. He’s not explaining this correctly. He’s so tired he might just curl up and fall asleep right here, right now, on Eddie’s front door step. Maybe the saxophone will lull him to sleep.
“Sorry, I’m—I just got off a forty-eight-hour shift from hell. I’m just—I’m dead on my feet, man. Is there any chance you can just—not—” Buck makes vague gesturing of playing a saxophone, cheeks puffed out and fingers pressing vaguely where he imagines saxophone buttons are. He makes quiet little tooting noises. “I hate to be this guy, I just—please. Just tonight.”

Summary
“Rav, I’ll just be—”
He glances up, and that is not Ravi Panikkar. Instead, it’s Eddie Diaz who stands there in full goalie gear, grinning down at him like they’re old friends. “Hey, man. Just thought I’d say hey. Gonna be fun being on the same team for once, yeah?”
Buck scoffs, standing and grabbing his stick. “Right.”
“C’mon, man. We’re teammates now.” Eddie tugs off a glove and holds out his hand. “Fresh start?”
Fresh start. Sure. Like he’s not stepping into Chimney’s spot, acting like they’re not massive boots to fill. Like, he hasn’t spent years being a massive dick every time they’ve gone head-to-head. Like Buck is supposed to just—
Buck shakes his head, huffing before pushing past him, shoulders colliding roughly as he makes his way out of the locker room.

Summary
“I'm just–”
He would attribute the crack in his voice to his screaming after the well collapsed on top of him. He felt like he was always screaming for help, but no one ever came. Always screaming, always drowning.
“I'm just really cold,” he finally said.

Summary
He completely pulls the charger from the wall as he fumbles to put in his passcode. He doesn’t know who to call first. Everyone is busy, carrying on with their lives and Buck is stuck here in the loft with the terrifying ghost of his childhood like an omen. Out of the corner of his eye he catches the Crooked Smiled Man now standing in the dark entrance way to his bathroom. He swallows around the taste of blood in his mouth, hands shaking, useless as his list of contacts blur beneath the burn of tears.
Eddie Eddie Eddie
He doesn’t know where the feeling comes from, but it’s sudden and sharp and excruciating. Eddie is the first name at the top of his list, his most recent calls and texts, and he doesn’t hesitate to hit the call button.

Summary
He’s not sure how long they stand like that. Seconds and minutes bleed into each other, Eddie’s thoughts slow and syrupy for the first time in hours. It gives his mind a chance to let the memory pop up again, the sound of his Abuela’s voice, the warmth of her palm against his chest as she said:
‘You were looking in the wrong place.’
And he knows— has known, where the right place is. It feels silly now to pretend like he doesn’t when the knowledge of it sits there underneath his sternum, warm and insistent and obvious with Buck’s arms around him.
