He was the one who’d called them, who’d asked to meet up. There was a conversation that was long overdue, one he’d - in all honesty - much rather forget about entirely, one he wanted to get out of the way so he’d never have to think about it again. He was the one who’d said they should talk.
And yet, so far he’d said nothing.
He’d opened his mouth a few times to start only to snap it shut again a second or two later, the words refusing to come to him.
The clock ticked on for roughly another minute, and he opened his mouth to try again.

Summary
They’d been returning from Mandalore, gathered together in the hangar of the ship they’d been granted for the mission. They were smaller in number now, but their spirits had still been high.
They hadn’t dared to hope that they’d fight alongside their commander again. And so, even after the siege was won, they didn’t hope for more. Commander Tano had requested help, and they had delivered. They’d be sad to see her go, their commander, their sister. But if her path was to once again diverge from theirs, they would send her off with smiles and salutes and a hearty reminder that her brothers would always be by her side should she need them again.
As the Venator exited hyperspace and drifted closer to the Coruscant atmosphere, they’d prepared to say their goodbyes.
Commander Tano had stood before them, Rex on one side and a space left open on the other, where Vaughn would have stood had he survived. She’d looked at them all, eyes as misty as theirs were beneath their helmets. She’d asked to see their faces and so they’d complied, just as they always had when orders left her mouth.
She’d met their eyes one by one, a shy, almost hesitant smile pulling at her lips.
“Would you take me back?”
