What does it matter to Alice, anyway, if Gwen wants to act like nothing’s happened? It’s not like their little after hours hookup was meaningful to her or anything. She’s had her share of casual one night stands with no call the morning after, and her thing with Gwen hadn’t even gotten to that: just some kisses, some groping, and an awkward parting with polite, impersonal goodbyes. Nothing that warranted further talk about it.
The thing is, Gwen isn’t acting as if nothing happened. She's avoiding Alice completely, and it's annoying.

If somebody had invented a way to reach her in real time, Marcille would be the first to jump on that, too. Perhaps it was good that the only option was slow, reliable mail. “I know she can't actually do that... but she's been writing once every few days. She went to visit her parents,” she went on, biting the inside of her cheek, “and now she wrote that she's coming back tomorrow morning, if all goes well.”
Kabru studied her curiously. She looked sick with anxiety. What a curious reaction to that piece of information. There had to be something more there. Ah, how best to poke and prod at it until it spills out? “That's wonderful! She's been gone for a while, no?”
“Three weeks and three days,” Marcille replied auromatically. She hid the letter in her pocket.
