Summary
No one was making it better for him either, he heard the snide comments made about him as he walked down the school hallways. Everyone always believed he was a queer, but his dad and football covered it up well. But now he has no dad and hand doesn’t play football anymore, he knows he will only let the team down and the fact that he lost weight didn’t help his case one bit. The worst part was, he wanted to lose that weight, and he still does. He wants it all to be gone till it just kills him off eventually. That’s why he refrained from taking his shirt off in front of Exer, because he know the questions would pour in like a flash flood.
For some reason, David didn’t understand why he felt like this, and why he isolated himself then felt abandoned by people after telling them to leave him alone. Like his poor sister, who just loved him too much, his mother who would kill for him, and Exer. The man he loved most.

So when the rustling got closer, and the twigs snapping started to get closer to the beach. He just froze up, his original plan of diving back into the water failed, betrayed by his flight, fright, or freeze response. His head turned towards the pinewoods just behind him, his eyes wide with fear, waiting for whoever was in that forest to emerge. Or maybe whatever was in that forest because what if it wasn’t even a human, what if it it was some strange creature, what if the ghost stories were true?! Okay, now he was properly over thinking it, it will just be a nosy pirate.
The figure finally emerged, yet again, ruining his train of thought.

“David… what happened?” Her voice cracked and tears started to stream down her face, like she couldn’t help it at all. That only made David feel worse, and more like it was all his fault, it made him feel worse than when he was kicked out. This one was worse because it was completely his fault, he never should’ve called Kevin lame or anything along those lines. God he had such a loud mouth for some reason, he could never shut up! Maybe he should just stay mute until the day he decides to die.
“It’s nothing Brenda, I will be fine! No need to worry about me!” He exclaimed, he certainly was not the best actor, that fake smile that he plastered on his face was like putting a band aid on a cracked glass of water. It would fall off eventually and then the water would all just spill right out. Thats why he stood up and tried to walk out of the room with all the watery ice bags in his hands, that did not work.

Summary
In a desperate attempt to make himself feel better, he tried to remember all his good memories. He tried to remember his and Exer’s first kiss but it was like he couldn’t remember anything except bad things, he couldn’t remember anything but the throbbing pain when his dad hit him right in the eye. Each hit, each painful mark left a permanent scar on his body.
It’s not like David could even like anything anymore, he felt like a freak whenever he kissed Exer. Yes, he liked kissing Exer but he didn’t like the mocking thoughts that came with it. David only really liked school because it was an excuse to get away from his dad, but now he had no excuse to like school. Plus he was a laughing stock there and he hated it, he hated who he used to be, and most of all he hated himself. Then on top of that, there was also the fact that he would have to see Ricky and Marty who constantly tease him, it never used to get under his skin but now it does. Ever since the assembly where Exer told everyone he was a bully, it made everyone meaner than before almost like they had been bass boosted.
————Or, David is depressed and Exer helps.
