Elphaba, who knows that Galinda’s friendship and affection doesn’t make sense.

Elphaba is hit with a wave of affection so strong she has to breathe deliberately, has to take stock of all the spots along her arm where Galinda’s body is pressed. She wishes, for one deep frustrated moment, that she was more. More experienced, better with friendship, with affection. More romantic, even. Sometimes she forgets how people act, forgets what is considered acceptable. She wants to wrap Galinda up, dote on her and tease her— my poor baby, those are the words that flutter around her head, but Elphaba Thropp doesn’t use words like that. It would be silly. Galinda would think she was being so, so silly.

“I’m fine. Things are going well. I…” Glinda hesitated. She tried not to ever say anything too sappy to Elphaba, who never knew how to accept such things gracefully, but she couldn’t help it. “I miss you,” Glinda admitted softly. Again, the line went silent for a beat too long. Glinda opened her mouth to soften the admission, but before she could, Elphaba’s quiet voice filled her ear.
“I miss you, too.”
After graduation, Elphaba and Glinda find themselves in separate cities and therefore apart for the first time in years. They keep in contact through letters, phone calls, and occasional visits. When Elphaba won’t stop being elusive about how she’s faring after being cut off financially, Glinda worries a completely appropriate amount. (She tries to offer a completely appropriate amount of help, too.)

Summary
Galinda is quiet. "I'm going to become your new best friend," she says finally.
This startles Elphaba so much that she looks up from her book. There's no twitch in Galinda's lips; she's gazing at Elphaba with uncomfortable sincerity. Elphaba glares back.
“You'll see,” Galinda promises, her ineffable cheer returning. "I'm irresistible."
Elphaba realizes the black hat is a prank before Galinda has the chance to make it up to her at the Ozdust, producing the most one-sided best friendship in Shiz history.
