Hobbits are created by Yavanna, Goddess of Life and Nature and wife of Mahal. As a result, hobbits are plant-like, love growing things, and are deeply connected with the earth. They possess the ability to camouflage their skin and hair to match their surroundings, along with other hidden skills. Gandalf thinks this makes Bilbo an excellent candidate for a burglar.
